16. Faux Terracotta Vase Makeover
Thrifty glass vases, clear mason jars, and dated ceramic pots can easily be elevated to look like authentic, centuries-old Mediterranean terracotta pottery using a brilliant painting technique that relies on an unexpected kitchen pantry staple: baking soda.
Combine acrylic paint in warm earth tones—such as rust red, sandy beige, soft clay, or warm taupe—with two tablespoons of baking soda in a mixing bowl. The chemical reaction between the paint and baking soda creates a thick, foamy, chalky texture that mimics the matte, porous look of aged clay. Apply the mixture generously to the exterior of your glass vessel using a rough bristle paint brush, using sweeping horizontal strokes. Apply two to three coats, allowing proper drying time between applications. Once dry, dust a tiny amount of flour or white chalk powder into the crevices to create an authentic, beautifully aged patina effect.
