Lace has a timeless, nostalgic quality that translates beautifully into clay. Lace-imprinted ornaments are perfect for holiday decorations, heirloom gift tags, or delicate window hangings that catch the afternoon sun. To create these, search for vintage lace doilies, scraps of bridal lace, or heavily textured ribbons. Roll out a smooth sheet of white air dry clay to a thickness of about a quarter-inch. Lay your chosen lace fabric flat across the clay, ensuring there are no wrinkles or folds.
Roll over the lace once with firm, even pressure using a rolling pin. When you peel the lace away, you will be left with an incredibly detailed, raised pattern that mimics the delicate threads of the fabric. Use cookie cutters in classic shapes—such as stars, hearts, angels, or simple elegant circles—to cut out your ornaments. Use a toothpick or a straw to punch a clean hanging hole at the top of each shape. After drying, you can leave them pure white for a clean, minimalist look, or highlight the lace details by gently rubbing a metallic wax or a soft pastel wash over the raised surfaces. Thread a luxurious velvet or silk ribbon through the hole to complete the look.
