10. Botanical Leaf Impression Dishes

10

Celebrate the changing seasons by creating gorgeous, organic dishes shaped like actual tree leaves. This project is best done in the spring or autumn when leaves are abundant and highly textured. Look for large, sturdy leaves with prominent veins on their undersides, such as monstera, maple, oak, hosta, or fig leaves. Roll out a sheet of clay that is slightly larger than your chosen leaf. Place the leaf face down (vein-side down) onto the clay and roll over it firmly to transfer the intricate skeletal pattern of the leaf onto the clay surface.

Using a sharp craft knife, carefully trace and cut around the perimeter of the leaf, removing the excess clay. Lift the clay leaf and place it inside a shallow bowl, gently pressing it down so the edges curve upward, creating a natural dish shape. Leave the leaf in place while the clay dries to help it retain its natural texture and form. Once dry, peel the real leaf away to reveal the stunningly realistic impression. Paint the dish in rich, metallic bronze, copper, or deep forest greens, blending the colors to mimic the natural variegation of autumn foliage. Seal with a high-gloss glaze to make the leaf look dew-kissed and fresh.
