7. Faux Speckled Stoneware Mugs
There is an undeniable charm to rustic, hand-thrown pottery, but you don’t need a kiln to achieve that cozy, speckled stoneware look. With the right techniques, air dry clay can be transformed into beautiful decorative mugs and vessels that look like they came straight from an artisan’s pottery wheel. Begin by wrapping a slab of clay around a cylindrical mold, such as a cardboard tube or a glass jar wrapped in parchment paper. Blend the seam thoroughly using a wooden modeling tool and a damp sponge. Cut a circular base from another piece of clay, score the edges, apply slip, and attach it firmly to the bottom of your cylinder.
To fashion the handle, roll out a thick coil of clay, shape it into a comfortable “C” curve, and attach it to the side of the mug using the reliable score-and-slip method. Once the mug is completely dry and sanded, it is time for the paint magic. Paint the entire vessel with a base coat of warm cream or oatmeal-colored acrylic paint mixed with a pinch of baking soda to create a textured, ceramic-like finish. Once dry, dip an old toothbrush into dark brown or black paint and flick the bristles with your thumb to splatter fine speckles all over the surface. Finish with a matte sealer.
