5. Textured Succulent Wall Planters
Inject vertical greenery into your home with semi-circular wall pockets designed to cradle air plants, small succulents, or dried floral arrangements. These planters look exceptionally beautiful when grouped in trios of varying sizes. To construct a wall pocket, roll out a slab of clay and cut out a large circle. Cut this circle directly in half to create two semi-circles. One half will serve as the flat back of the planter that rests against the wall, while the other half will form the curved front pocket. To ensure the pocket can hold soil or plants, gently stretch and curve the front semi-circle, creating a spacious pouch.
Before assembling, texture the front piece using a cross-hatch tool, a piece of burlap, or a decorative stamp. To join the two pieces, score the contacting edges deeply with a needle tool and apply a small amount of slip (a paste made of clay and water). Press the edges together firmly, smoothing the seam with your thumb to create a strong, seamless bond. Don’t forget to poke a hole near the top of the flat back piece for easy hanging. Let the planter dry slowly, supporting the hollow pocket with crumpled paper towels so it doesn’t sag. Once cured, paint the exterior in a desert-inspired palette of terracotta, sand, and sage, and coat the interior with a waterproof sealant to protect the clay from moisture.
