4. Celestial Moon Phase Wall Hanging
Capture the mystical energy of the night sky with a celestial moon phase wall hanging that adds a dreamy, bohemian touch to any gallery wall. This project is a wonderful exercise in symmetry and balance. Begin by rolling out your clay to a uniform thickness of about one-eighth of an inch. Using circular cutters or a drinking glass, cut out five or seven identical circles. Keep one circle whole to represent the full moon. For the remaining circles, use the same cutter to slice away crescent and gibbous shapes, carefully recreating the progression of the lunar cycle from new moon to full moon.
Use a metal skewer or a straw to poke a small hole at the top and bottom of each moon phase, ensuring they align perfectly so the piece hangs straight. While the clay is drying, you can plan your color scheme. A deep, midnight blue background with metallic gold or silver leaf applied to the craters creates a striking contrast. Alternatively, a monochrome palette of soft greys and whites mimics the actual dusty surface of the moon. Once painted and sealed, string the lunar phases together vertically using metallic wire, rustic jute twine, or delicate brass chains. Hang a small brass bell or a raw crystal point at the very bottom to add movement, weight, and a touch of whimsy to the finished art piece.
