17. Organic Sculptural Pinch Pots

Pinch pots are one of the oldest and most fundamental clay-shaping techniques, but they can be elevated into stunning, high-end art pieces by focusing on organic asymmetry and texture. To create an organic pinch pot, start with a smooth ball of clay about the size of a lemon. Press your thumb deep into the center of the ball, leaving about a half-inch of clay at the bottom. Gently pinch the clay upward and outward, rotating the ball in your hand as you go to create even, thin walls.
Instead of trying to make the pot perfectly symmetrical, embrace the natural variations of your handiwork. Allow the rim to wave, dip, and curve organically. You can add texture to the exterior by carving deep vertical grooves with a loop tool, or by pressing a coarse stone or sea shell into the wet clay. Once dry, these pots have a beautiful, ancient quality. Paint them in warm, earthy tones like ochre, sienna, or charcoal, and use them to hold small treasures, air plants, or simply display them as standalone sculptural objects on a modern sideboard.
