19. Sculptural Abstract Face Plaques
Celebrate the beauty of the human form with a stunning, modern abstract face plaque. Inspired by Picasso and Matisse line drawings, these plaques bring a sophisticated, artistic energy to any gallery wall. Start by rolling out a thick, organic slab of clay to serve as your canvas—this can be an irregular oval, an arch, or a freeform shape. Next, roll out long, thin, uniform coils of clay. These coils will act as the “lines” of your drawing.
Carefully bend, curve, and loop the coils across your clay slab to form the abstract outline of a face, focusing on continuous lines for the eyes, nose, and lips. Once you are happy with the composition, score and slip the coils onto the backing slab, pressing them down gently but firmly to ensure they fuse together. After drying, paint the backing slab in a soft, neutral cream and the raised line-art coils in a bold, contrasting matte black or deep navy. This creates a beautiful, three-dimensional shadow effect when hung on the wall, making the abstract face appear to jump off the canvas.
