Gothic Book of Spells

Create an ancient, leather-bound spellbook that looks like it belongs on a witch’s altar. Take an old, thick hardcover book from a thrift store. Open it to a middle page and use Mod Podge to glue the pages together, or keep it closed to focus on the exterior. To create the textured, aged leather cover, hot glue a plastic spider, a small skull, or a plastic eye to the center of the book cover. Then, drape a piece of paper towel or tissue paper soaked in Mod Podge over the entire cover, pressing it into the crevices of the plastic items to create wrinkles and folds that mimic old skin.

Once dry, paint the entire cover with black acrylic paint. After the black base coat dries, use a dry brush technique with brown and metallic gold paint to highlight the raised wrinkles, giving it a weathered, antique leather finish. Write cryptic runes or “Book of Spells” on the spine using gold paint or 3D fabric paint before sealing the entire project with a matte clear coat.
