Modern Concrete Pedestal Fruit Bowl
Elevate your kitchen counter decor—literally—with a magnificent modern concrete pedestal fruit bowl. Combining a wide, shallow basin with a thick, sculptural base column creates an elevated centerpiece that demands attention. The cool, neutral tone of concrete provides a stunning visual backdrop that makes the vibrant greens of fresh apples, the rich yellows of lemons, and the deep purples of grapes pop with extraordinary natural brilliance.
Building a pedestal bowl requires casting two separate concrete components or casting them as a single integrated piece using a clever stacked mold structure. For a two-piece assembly, select a large plastic salad bowl or smooth plastic saucer for the top dish, and a plastic funnel, wide PVC pipe, or tapered plastic cup for the pedestal base. Pour your concrete mix into both molds separately, inserting a metal dowel or threaded rod into the center of the base piece while wet, leaving half of it exposed to act as an anchor pin for the upper bowl.
Once both pieces have cured completely, demold them and sand the joining surfaces flat. Drill a corresponding hole into the underside of the top bowl, apply a generous layer of high-strength two-part epoxy around the metal pin, and press the bowl and pedestal base tightly together. Allow the epoxy to set according to the manufacturer’s instructions. To make the piece food-safe for whole fruits, coat the entire interior and exterior of the bowl with multiple coats of food-safe mineral oil, beeswax, or a food-safe masonry sealer, turning a practical kitchen item into an exquisite, museum-worthy focal point.
