Modern Concrete Fire Bowl

Nothing brings people together like the warm, relaxing ambiance of an open flame. A modern concrete desktop fire bowl lets you bring the cozy appeal of a bonfire indoors or onto small patio tables safely. Burning clean, odorless rubbing alcohol or gel fuel inside a thick, heat-resistant concrete shell, these portable fire pits produce real, dancing flames without smoke, soot, or dangerous sparks.

To build a portable concrete fire bowl, you need two nesting bowls of different sizes—a large outer plastic basin (around 10 to 12 inches wide) and a smaller inner bowl (around 6 to 8 inches wide). You will also need a stainless steel fuel cup, such as a metal can or stainless steel bar shaker, to nest inside the inner chamber to hold your liquid isopropyl alcohol or bioethanol fuel canisters safely.

Mix a heavy-duty, heat-resistant concrete mix, combining cement with sand and fine aggregate. Pour the mix into the larger bowl, then push the smaller bowl down into the center, placing heavy rocks inside the inner bowl to hold it in place at a uniform depth. Tap the exterior walls thoroughly to force air bubbles to rise and escape. Let the heavy structure cure completely for at least 3 to 4 days to ensure all chemical water is fully bound and the shell achieves structural resilience against thermal expansion. Unmold the bowl, set your stainless steel fuel cup into the center, surround it with decorative lava rocks or polished river pebbles, and light the fuel with a long match for an instant, breathtaking fire feature.
