6. Japandi-Style Low Bench
Merging Japanese functionality with Scandinavian warmth, a low wooden bench serves wonderfully as an entryway seat or an end-of-bed accent.
- How to Make It: Cut a thick, heavy slab of ash or white oak for the seat. Create four tapered cylindrical legs using a lathe or purchase pre-made mid-century modern tapered wooden legs. Drill angled holes into the underside of the seat using a jig, apply wood glue, and twist the legs securely into place.
- Tips: Round over the top edges of the bench seat with a router to give it a softer, more inviting tactile feel.
- Variations: Weave a paper cord or natural rattan seat surface within a wooden frame for added texture instead of a solid wood top.
