4. Sculptural Taper Candle Holders
The “sculptural” trend in home decor is all about pieces that double as art. Taper candle holders are functional, but when made from clay, they become statement objects that hold their own even when the candles aren’t lit.
The Aesthetic: Think of wabi-sabi influences—imperfect, organic, and raw. These holders should look like they were hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel.
The Process: Build up the clay around a hollow tube (to create the hole for the candle). Once the basic shape is formed, spend time smoothing the clay with a damp sponge or your fingers to get that “ceramic” finish. Use a matte finish sealant once baked to prevent any plastic-like shine. When styled in a cluster of three on a dining table, they create a centerpiece that looks like it was sourced from a high-end Scandinavian design shop.
