12. The Monochromatic Paperwhite Bulb Sprout in Raw Clay

12

Celebrate the quiet beauty of botanical growth by forcing paperwhite bulbs, hyacinths, or grape muscari inside a raw, unglazed clay or terracotta trough. Instead of hiding the roots and soil, this living vase arrangement highlights the entire life cycle of the plant, bringing a fresh, clean, spring scent and architectural minimalism to your window sill or kitchen counter. Select a wide, low rectangular clay trough or shallow oval bowl made from unpolished terracotta or grey clay. Layer the bottom with clean white pea gravel or polished river stones. Nestle several paperwhite or Narcissus bulbs side-by-side on top of the stones, packing them close together so they support one another as they grow tall. Fill the trough with water just until it touches the very bottom of the bulbs, taking care not to submerge them completely. Over the course of a few weeks, watch as bright white roots weave through the stones while tall, emerald-green shoots blossom into fragrant white flowers.
